Quick Facts
About The Presidio
The Presidio is a 1,500-acre national park site on the San Francisco side that surrounds the southern approach to the Golden Gate Bridge. Once the oldest continuously operated military post in the United States (1776–1994), it now features 24+ miles of hiking trails, historic buildings, forests, and multiple viewpoints of the bridge. The Batteries to Bluffs Trail offers dramatic cliff-edge views, while the Coastal Trail provides a gentler walk with bridge glimpses through the trees.
Why Visit The Presidio
The Presidio combines bridge views with a rich layer of history, nature, and culture. You can visit the Walt Disney Family Museum, see Andy Goldsworthy's outdoor art installations (Spire, Wood Line, Tree Fall, Earth Wall), walk the historic Lovers' Lane (dating to the 1700s), and enjoy multiple bridge viewpoints all in one area. The free PresidiGo shuttle makes it easy to hop between spots without a car.
Photography Tips
The Batteries to Bluffs Trail has the most dramatic bridge views — steep cliffs with crashing waves below and the bridge above. Wide-angle for the cliff perspective, telephoto for isolating the bridge through trees. The Presidio's eucalyptus and cypress forests provide unique natural framing. Rob Hill Campground area has an interesting distant perspective.

The Presidio has significant microclimates. The western edge near the bridge is foggiest, while the interior near the Main Post is often sunnier. On marginal days, you might find clear views from elevated spots in the Presidio even when the bridge approach is foggy.
