Golden Gate Bridge in July
July is the foggiest month — 18 fog days, only 42% clear conditions ('No Sky July'). If clear views are your priority, visit September–October instead. If you must visit in July, aim for noon–2 PM and check our live visibility tracker first. Dress very warmly. Fog photography is exceptional this month.
What to Expect in July
July is the foggiest month at the Golden Gate Bridge. Nicknamed "No Sky July" by locals, the marine layer is at its thickest and most persistent with 18 fog days — the bridge is clearly visible only 42% of the time. Paradoxically, this is also peak tourist season. If clear views are your priority, July is the worst month to visit.
Visibility in July
The fog is relentless. Many days start fogged in and never fully clear. When the fog does burn off (usually between 11 AM and 2 PM), it's often a narrow window before it returns. The marine layer can be 1,500+ feet deep, swallowing even the 746-foot tower tops. Visibility below 0.5 miles is common in the morning and evening.
Check live visibility nowBest Time of Day
Noon to 2 PM offers the best (but not guaranteed) chance of clear views. The fog cycle is at its most extreme: dense fog until late morning, brief clearing, then fog returns by 4 PM. Some days never clear. Checking the live visibility tracker is essential — don't make the trip without checking first.
View 3-day fog forecastWhat to Expect
Maximum tourist crowds combined with minimum visibility — a frustrating combination. Parking lots are full by 9 AM. The bridge is the coldest it gets all year at the deck level. Wind gusts frequently exceed 25 mph. Expect to wait for fog to clear and be prepared for it not to clear at all. Have indoor backup plans ready.
Photography Tips
For fog photography, July is paradise. The marine layer is deep and dramatic. Towers-above-fog shots require getting above 500+ feet (Hawk Hill). Fog pouring through the Golden Gate strait is at its most photogenic. Time-lapse of fog rolling in and out is spectacular. Bring weather protection for gear — moisture is constant.

Dress for winter. A warm waterproof jacket, fleece, hat, and gloves are not excessive. Wind chill on the bridge can make 54°F feel like 40°F. Fog drip will soak lightweight clothing. Many tourists arrive in shorts and t-shirts and are miserable — don't be one of them. Bring a change of warm clothes in your car.
Events & Happenings
Fourth of July fireworks over the Bay (view from Crissy Field, but often fog-obscured). Outside Lands Music Festival at Golden Gate Park (early August preview tickets in July). Fleet Week preparations begin.
